If you’ve ever had a load rejected at the transfer station with a $250 penalty fee, there’s a good chance drywall was involved. It’s one of the most common. And most avoidable. Mistakes in renovation waste disposal in BC.

This guide covers everything you need to know to dispose of drywall properly on Central Vancouver Island.

Why Drywall Disposal Is Different

Drywall (also called gypsum board or gyproc) looks like ordinary building material. And usually is. But drywall installed before roughly 1985 may contain asbestos in its joint compound, texture coatings, or backing materials.

Because of this, BC transfer stations require documentation before they’ll accept any drywall load. No paperwork = rejected load + fee. This applies to every load containing drywall, even small amounts mixed in with other renovation debris.

Step 1: Determine When the Drywall Was Installed

This is the first question you need to answer. Check your home’s build date or renovation history:

  • Built or renovated after 1990: You’re likely in the clear, but documentation may still be required at some facilities.
  • Built or renovated between 1970–1990: This is the high-risk window. Asbestos testing is strongly recommended.
  • Built before 1970: Asbestos testing is essential before any drywall disturbance or disposal.

When in doubt, test. The cost of a basic asbestos test ($200–$400 for residential properties) is far less than the cost of a rejected load or the health consequences of disturbed asbestos.

Step 2: Get an Asbestos Assessment (If Required)

If your drywall could contain asbestos, you need to hire a certified asbestos inspector before doing any demolition. They’ll take samples and provide a lab-certified report.

What you need:

  • Asbestos survey from a certified inspector
  • Lab results showing negative for asbestos (or a clearance certificate)
  • Keep this documentation through your entire project

On Vancouver Island, certified inspectors are available through WorkSafeBC-registered firms. If you’re a contractor, this is a WorkSafeBC requirement. Not optional.

Step 3: Keep the Documentation With Your Load

When you drop off drywall at a transfer station. Or when we pick up your bin. The paperwork needs to travel with the material. This is what the transfer station will ask for:

  • Your asbestos clearance report (or equivalent documentation)
  • The address of the property the material came from
  • Date of demolition

If you’re using our bin rental service: Let us know your project involves drywall when you book. We’ll walk you through exactly what you need so your load isn’t rejected on pickup.

What Happens If You Don’t Have Documentation?

Transfer stations are strict about this. Without proper documentation:

  1. Your load will be flagged for inspection
  2. If documentation is missing or insufficient, the load is rejected
  3. You’ll be charged a minimum $250 rejection fee. And you’re still responsible for removing the material
  4. You’ll need to arrange proper documentation and re-deliver

This is completely avoidable with a bit of preparation before your project starts.

Can Drywall Go in a Rental Bin?

Yes. But only when:

  • You have the required asbestos clearance documentation
  • The drywall is not confirmed asbestos-containing material (ACM)
  • You inform your bin rental company that drywall is included

At All Canadian, we accept drywall in our bins when proper documentation is in place. Just let us know when you book and we’ll confirm what’s required.
